WHY THE ENDOWMENT FUND?

Over 50 years ago, this fund was started to assure protection for the children at Mooseheart and the elders at Moosehaven in the event of a depression.

At present, there are sufficient funds to survive for less than four years, but WE PROMISED MORE.

I remember when this fund reached one hundred thousand dollars and how happy we were to reach this goal. All went well with interest from this fund, until suddenly the cost of living went out of sight. Raising dues to the point of survival was out of reason. We would lose too many members.
With a severe decrease in membership, the Endowment fund collections went down, but because of good investments Mooseheart and Moosehaven managed to hold its own. This applied less than five million dollars to this operation each year, still leaving twenty seven million needed to open our doors on January first
.

At this point, there was no alternative but to seek help fro the membership by way of letters, asking for donations and support of advertised products offered in the Moose Magazine.
WHILE THIS WAS HELPFUL, IT STILL WAS NOT ENOUGH.

THE PROBLEM WITH THE ENDOWMENT FUND

Over 50 years ago this fund started as a penny collection. Everyone gave a penny or two, rarely a nickel or dime.
This is the reason it grew so slowly. Imagine what this fund would be today had it been a nickel or dime fund. The extra interest income and peace of mind as to the security of our order, told us there was light at the end of the tunnel.
The Endowment fund is supported by five percent of our members, the ones attending the meetings. What then is the solution to this problem?
Keep supporting the Endowment fund collections at meetings, dances and all
other functions at your lodge. Put in nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars. This will help a lot, but something else is needed.

G-I-M-M-E F-I-V-E
How is Gimme Five different?
It is geared to reach 100 percent of our membership via Moose Magazines, Lodge newsletters, and word of mouth. Tax deductible when handled correctly. Donors recognized for various amounts.
DONATION
You will be asked to donate ten cents per day, rather than pennies a week. A penny 50 years ago would be equivalent to a dollar today.
The easy way:
Give $182.50 one time in 5 years
Or $36.50 one time each year
If necessary, ten cents a day for five years
The simple option is to have an amount of your choice debited from your bank.

Important things to remember:
Make check payable to Moose Charities
Make a note in lower left hand corner “GIMME FIVE”
Put lodge name and number on check
Put moose id under your signature
If a memorial gift, let Mooseheart know, giving name and address of family

 Moose Riders

We are in the process of organizing a Moose Riders Charter for Surfside Moose Lodge 2351. It is open to all members in good standings in LOOM and WOTM. You don’t have to own or ride a motorcycle to be eligible. We will need support and assistance members.

We will conduct our first organizational meeting May 4th at 1:00 pm; food will be available at the lodge that day. We will read and approve our charter, set meeting dates for the year, discuss nomination and election of officers, establish a dues structure, and determine rides and functions. The Moose Riders will not compete in any way with other fraternal organization’s riders clubs, so if you belong to another please consider the Moose Riders also.
Anyone interested, please plan to attend.

Fraternally, “Sig”

2007 Member's Christmas Party

The Member's Christmas Party was on outstanding event and it's sellout is evidence of the banner year we are experiencing here at Surfside the year.

The only downside that clouded the event was our inability to accommodate everyone and  that many of our members had to be turned away.  To those unfortunate ones who were unable to attend, our deepest apologies.  But, as everyone knows there's only so much "stuff" one can put in a five pound Hall.   Perhaps next year.

Below is pictorial evidence of the success of the occasion:

Supreme Governor Visits Surfside

Supreme Governor Eugene C. Huggins

Surfside Moose Lodge No. 2351 has been selected to host Eugene C. Huggins, Supreme Governor of the Loyal Order of Moose, at an enrollment of new members in his honor, scheduled for 7:00PM on Thursday, January 24, 2008.  Brother Huggins rose to become the Moose fraternity’s chief presiding officer on Feb. 14, 2007, upon the resignation of Supreme Governor William R. Scott.  Huggins, of Illinois, was then elected by vote of the Supreme Lodge to a full-year term as Supreme Governor in his own right, in late June, at the organization’s 119th International Convention in Orlando, FL.

Gene had been elected Supreme Jr. Governor in May 2006 at the 118th International Conventions in Chicago, after having served on the fraternity’s Supreme Council since 1999.  He had previously served two years each on the Mooseheart Board of Governors and the Moosehaven Board of Governors.  He had also been a member of the International Community Service Committee from 1991 to 1995.

Gene joined the Moose in 1967 at Batavia, IL Lodge 682.  He served all officers’ chairs including Governor.  Gene has also served on numerous Lodge committees, and has served continually on his Lodge’s Ritual staff since 1969.

A member of Mecca Moose Legion 9 since 1972, Gene served as Secretary for the Batavia Moose Legion unit for two years.  Gene was Ritual chairman of District 2 for the Illinois Moose Association.  He has also served as President of District 2.

A member of the 50 Division of the 25 Club, Gene received the Fellowship Degree of Honor in 1984, and when the Pilgrim Degree of Merit was conferred on him in 1994, he represented the class.

Now is the time for every member of our Lodge to share their pride in the Moose by asking a friend, relative or business associate to join.

Help 4 Kids

Thanksgiving and Christmas Activity

In the first picture below on Nov 21, Bud Patton is shown lifting crates of fresh chickens being donated to "Help 4 Kids" program for Thanksgiving deliveries. This is an ongoing effort to collect foodstuffs and toys for hungry children in the area. Help 4 Kids is run by Barbara Mains and her volunteers, not just at holidays but everyday yearlong.  Bud has been active in this service for over 4 years as is brother, John Sohl (not pictured). Food Lion on Glenns Bay Rd, Jim, Gen Mgr and Terry Haskins (Lodge brother) and Meat Manager of Food Lion (pictured in last picture) have helped make this possible with generous discounts of chickens and allowing labeled boxes in the store to collect from the public many canned goods. The Christmas delivery was made Dec. 7. Ms. Mains is very appreciative. Also, Chris Netto, Assistant Manager at Food Lion and also a WOTM member has made it possible for many donations of toys, plates & napkins for the many children's parties the lodge has sponsored.  Ms. Mains accepts donations year round . You may get in touch with either Bud or Jackie Patton for further info.

The Gate From Hell

Has Been Restored

...Again

A note from the Administrator:

Now that the back gate is again in working order (and we certainly hope it stays that way - at least for a day or two) The Start Date for all ANNUAL SUBSCRIBERS has been reset to DECEMBER 1st, 2007.  This means that renewal will not be due until November 30, 2008.

It has become obvious that we have some of the most accommodating members that can be found anywhere and your patience during this seemingly never ending problem is greatly appreciated.  Now, join us in keeping our fingers crossed that we are sparred some spurious bolt of lightening or future damage caused by an inconsiderate (Fill in your own explicative here) driver!

As a final note:  I hope you will let other back gate subscribers know of this and that you talk up this means of accessing our facilities to your friends and associates  who live in the western portions of our neighborhood.  It's a great selling tool for prospective new members who reside in that direction.

Administrator Paul Rinedoller, Sr.

We will be installing an ATM machine on the 8th of May.

Life Membership

Would you like to have a "LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP" in Surfside Beach Lodge, The Loyal Order Of Moose?  How about if the cost to you was "FREE?"

Sponsor 10 or more members from now (6/19/07) thru April 30th 2008 and you will be eligible.  This is a $600 dollar award.

Those brothers who achieve this level will have their names placed in a drawing at the Preferred Members party in May, 2008.  One member's name will be drawn and presented with a LIFE MEMBERSHIP.  A second name will be drawn and that brother will have his dues paid for one year.

PLEASto E NOTE that  All 10 of your applicants MUST BE DULY ENROLLED to qualify.  Also, it is worthy of noting that since as a rule we are not overwhelmed with members who sponsor 10 members in any given 1 year time frame, your chances of winning this award, should you be one that accomplishes that, are greatly enhanced.

               Kudos Korner

The idea of providing a forum, the sole purpose of which is to acknowledge the efforts of the members who actually make this lodge "tick," came to the web site staff as a rare, albeit, welcome suggestion.

Surfside Beach Moose Lodge is, by anyone's standards, a BIG business.  It's successful and seemingly smooth operation is by no means an accident.  Sure, it takes leadership but even the most competent administrators would be impotent in their efforts without a following of loyal, dedicated volunteers.  Though we are fortunate to have such a group of volunteers here at Surfside, generally speaking, we are too often guilty of failing to acknowledge the not-so-obvious; to give credit where credit is due and of taking them and their contributions for granted.  Kudos Korner will be the forum with which we hope to make up for  that shortcoming.

Sure, occasionally we make general acknowledgments for the benefit of a handful of members who attend the meetings, but Kudos Korner will be our vehicle  to bring these outstanding members and their contributions to the attention of the membership at large.

Our Administrator, Paul Rinedoller, by the nature of his job, is at the epicenter of the activity around the lodge.  As such he is the most aware of who is doing what to whom in regards to contributions over and above.  Paul as offered the following submission to kick start Kudos Korner.

In this edition of Kudos Korner:

In this episode of Kudos Korner we are delighted to highlight the contributions of Brother "Chick" Updegrove who selflessly donated his talents to make and donate a beautiful stand for the recently acquired large screen TV in the dining room.  He applied his extraordinary workmanship ability to fabricate the stand complete with castors to facilitate orienting the TV to virtually any use in the area.  Kudos are also in order for Diane Siegmund who added a nice coat of stain and to Brother Ray Franklin who lent his assistance as well.

Kudos One and All!

Be sure to watch this column for future acknowledgments of worthy members and their contributions.  Also, the membership at large is invited to submit names of individuals who are notable in their activities in support of Surfside Beach Moose Lodge.

Potluck Supper

May 8, 2008

The next Pot Luck Supper by the great “Chef Roger” and his crew will be:

May 8th

Followed by line and regular dancing.

From the Governor:

Thank you for allowing me to be your Governor for the next year. I pledge to do my part to make our lodge grow and prosper – I can only hope all of you will do the same.

Our new “Moose Year” starts May 1, 2008. This means a new Moose Membership Campaign from Moose International. I don’t know what the Theme or Awards will be, and frankly, I don’t care. What I care about is our lodge, and helping it grow and prosper. The Awards, I am sure will be quite nice as usual, but your Reward will be the satisfaction of knowing you did your part in securing the future of Your Lodge. Without new members we will not survive. At this time we have approximately 1,100 members and need to double that number this year. How? Easy: Each of us sponsors at least one new or former member. There is no doubt in my mind that each of us knows at least one person with whom we would like to share the Moose Experience. So, let’s all make a pledge to sign up a member this month. It’s easy, and it is the right thing to do.

From the Desk of the Administrator:

By the time you read this article, we will have entered the next Moose fiscal year. With membership showing a steady increase of brothers and co-workers, we can, and will, make this year even greater. You have elected new boards of officers. You have placed your lodge in their hands. Will they make every effort to ensure progress? “Yes” they will. Will they need YOUR help? “Yes” they will. Will YOU help them? Time will tell. I recall one of our members coining a phrase that: “A pat on the back is only 16 inches from a kick in the rear.” Let us hope that any and all comments or criticism of your boards is directed at the upper part of their anatomy.

Fraternally,

Paul A. Rinedoller, Sr. Administrator

MOOSE TALK INPUT

If you have an article to submit for the next issue of Moose Talk, please email to tmccorkle@aol.com or leave input at the lodge for pickup.  The next deadline for submissions is April 15.

This web site is dynamic by it's nature and as such, has no deadlines.  Input, at any time, is not only encouraged but welcomed.  After all, that's what makes it work.  If you have "news" that you feel our members would be interested in or should be aware of, by all means, send it in.  Further, though I try hard, I readily admit that I have no exclusive on "ideas" and encourage one and all to contribute suggestions for making this site more insightful and useful to the membership it is designed to serve.  I promise that each serious contribution will be considered and will receive a response. Use the email address above or email Stuart Reedy at sr5104@sccoast.net.

Mah Jongg Anyone?

Tuesday Morning Mah Jongg

Click a picture for an enlarged view

As some of you know we now have a group playing Mah Jongg on Tuesday mornings, starting at 9:30am.  Any one interested in coming out and joining the group please feel free to drop in and join us.

To give you an idea of what kind of group we have let us start by telling you what these caring people did for the holidays.  They started by deciding to make a donation to our kids at Mooseheart.  It then came to our attention that some local children and seniors could use a little help in making the holiday season a little brighter so we chose angels with a child’s age and gender or a senior with information as to what we might get to make their holiday a little better.  Well, these wonderful Mah Jongg people went all out—they filled two car trunks with gifts, which were distributed at the proper time.  So you see, we have fun and help the community at the same time.

Golden Moose:

                                       Golden Moose Notes

March 17, 2008

It was decided at the February meeting to get some information about upcoming events at LaBelle Amie  Vineyard, so here they are.

May 3- Key West Music & Wine Fest

May 10- All American Music & Wine Fest

June 7- American Pie Oldies Music Fest

June 21- First Blush of Summer Fest

Events usually start at noon and go until 5.

March 29&30 Several of us traveled to the Florida-Bermuda days at Moosehaven. The seniors there really seem to be enjoying themselves. We visited Moosehaven on Saturday afternoon for beverages and appetizers before we went Lodge hopping. It was a good time at the lodges we visited with chicken to go and karaoke to sign. We presented a potted flower to the W.O.T.M. adopted grandmother on Sunday before attending the festivities including lunch and fund raising. Made it home safely about 9:30.

More information on the Charlestown Tea Plantation road trip to discuss at the next meeting, but in the meantime, I found out that the tea is only harvested between Monday and Friday. If it rains the day before we go, tea will not be harvested. Tea is harvested all summer long so we can go in May or June or later.

We will be checking the schedule of plays at the local theaters, Conway, Georgetown, and  Murrells Inlet for presentation next  month  as well as another Game/Dessert day at the Lodge.

.

Our next meeting will be May 13th at 7pm in the dinning room. Join us for discussion of future events. If you haven't thought about being more involved as an officer in the Golden Moose, consider it now for the election will be April 8th.

Ask how you can become a member of this progressive and dynamic group of "YOUNGSTERS!"

If you would like to become a member in the Golden Moose Club we meet the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00PM at the lodge.  Watch this space for further announcements and activity reports.
